This year the international CYE (Coeliac Youth of Europe) summer camp was organised by Coeliactive in the Netherlands. 50 participants from 13 different European countries joined us. The summer camp took place in the surroundings of Nijmegen from the 29th of July until the 4th of August. The temperatures were unusually high.
At arrival the participants got their T-shirt and goodie bag. Then we ate gluten free pizza and drank gluten free beer. After this the summer camp officially started! We stayed at a nice location with a swimming pool, karaoke room and a pony named Janneke.
Highlights of the week were visiting the monkey zoo “Apenheul”, riding a bike and playing Dutch games like eating cookies from rope and walking with an egg on a spoon. We ate Dutch Stamppot, which is mashed potatoes with vegetables and a piece of sausage, from Delfstblue plates.
In Amsterdam we enjoyed unlimited gluten free pancakes on a boat trip. We did a walking tour though China-town, the Red Light District and Dam Square. After the free afternoon we had a nice meal in a typical Dutch restaurant. The nice busdriver Henk drove everyone home safely.
We did a treasure hunt using pictures in Nijmegen and the participants were really enthusiastic about this. We also played glow in the dark mini golf and had ice cream. The gala dinner, where everyone was wearing their best outfits, was incredibly tasty and the Oreo cheesecake was delicious!
We brought an educational visit to the National Museum of Liberty where we watched a documentary about Anne Frank and learned about World War II. On Friday the 3th of August, our last night, it was international beer day and after the barbeque we held a gluten free beer tasting with 16 different beers!
